US President Donald Trump said he just heard about India's Operation Sindoor on Pakistan and hoped that the escalation ends quickly. "It's a shame. We just heard about it as we were walking in the doors of the Oval. Just heard about it," Trump said as he was asked to comment after India launched a major military operation targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan. The operation, codenamed as Operation Sindoor, came in a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead, including 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen.
"I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past," Trump said.
"They've been fighting for a long time. They have been fighting for many, many decades. And centuries, actually, if you think about it. I hope it ends very quickly," Trump said.
US stance on India-Pakistan after Pahalgam
After the Pahalgam attack, the US said it stands strong with India against terrorism. Trump earlier said he's certain that India and Pakistan will work out of the current crisis. “I am very close to India and I’m very close to Pakistan, as you know. And they’ve had that fight for 1,000 years in Kashmir. Kashmir has been going on for 1,000 years, probably longer than that. And it was a bad one yesterday, though, that was a bad one. Over 30 people,” Trump said earlier.
US secretary of state Marco Rubio spoke to S Jaishankar and Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif after the Pahalgam attack and urged them to "de-escalate tensions".
"Secretary Marco Rubio spoke with Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The Secretary spoke of the need to condemn the terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam. Both leaders reaffirmed their continued commitment to holding terrorists accountable for their heinous acts of violence," his office said in a statement.
"The Secretary urged Pakistani officials’ cooperation in investigating this unconscionable attack. He also encouraged Pakistan to work with India to de-escalate tensions, re-establish direct communications, and maintain peace and security in South Asia," the statement said.
