Protests in Bhagalpur over desecration of religious site

BHAGALPUR : Desecration of a place of worship early Sunday led to tension in Sanhoula and surrounding areas of Kahalgaon subdivision in Bihar's Bhagalpur district.

According to sources, the incident occurred when it was still dark and the place of worship was locked and locals were asleep. The place of worship, about 300m from Sanhoula police station and close to the Jharkhand border, is a prominent religious site . The damage was noticed by locals on Sunday morning.

Angry residents informed the police. They blocked roads and protested outside the police station, demanding the arrest of the culprits and an investigation.

Bhagalpur SSP Anand Kumar said senior police officers were sent to the spot and a flag march was conducted. "A case has been registered and one suspect, described as mentally unstable, was arrested. CCTV footage will be reviewed. Meetings with peace committee members were held to maintain calm. The situation is peaceful, but we will take strict action against anyone trying to disturb social harmony," Kumar added.

Bhagalpur DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary said the administration was monitoring the situation. "Health department experts have been asked to assess the mental condition of the arrested person," Choudhary said.
