NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for turning his visit to the home of slain BSF jawan Mohammed Imtiaz into what it called a "red carpet event."
In a social media post on X, the Congress alleged that a road was hastily constructed in front of Imtiaz’s house and that red carpets and sofas were arranged in preparation for the chief minister’s visit.
"When Bihar’s CM Nitish Kumar visited the martyr’s home, a red carpet was laid out, comfortable sofas were arranged, and a road was hurriedly constructed. The martyr’s family is distraught, weeping uncontrollably, and the entire nation’s eyes are moist with grief," the post said.
"Yet, even on this tragic occasion, Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar couldn’t refrain from his 'event baazi'. This insensitive and crass behaviour is like rubbing salt into the wounds of the martyr’s family. This is utterly shameful. The nation is watching," it added.
Earlier, Nitish handed over a cheque for Rs 50 lakh to the BSF jawan's family and announced a government job for Imtiaz's son based on his qualifications.
The criticism came a day after Nitish Kumar’s former deputy-turned-rival, Tejashwi Yadav, also visited the slain BSF jawan’s home and paid tribute."The entire nation gratefully salutes the ultimate sacrifice and complete dedication of martyr Mohammed Imtiaz!" read a social media post by the RJD.
"Tejashwi Yadav met the martyr’s family to offer them solace and also facilitated a conversation with Lalu Prasad," it added.
BSF sub-inspector Mohammed Imtiaz was killed when his BSF unit positioned along the international border in RS Pura sector came under heavy Pakistani firing on May 10, amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.
"He, along with seven others, were wounded. While Imtiaz died of wounds, the others are stable and under treatment at a health facility," an official said.
