Tashard Choice will be strict with Jahmyr Gibbs in the Detroit Lions, even though they share a history

Detroit Lions ’ newly hired running backs coach Tashard Choice praised Lions’ assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Scott Montgomery at the Detroit Lions’ offensive assistant coaches meeting with the media on May 13. Choice said, “First and foremost, just the fact that when you inherit a room that Scott Montgomery has put together, as far as the level of consistency, the guys in that room have a standard and expectation to do really well. So, it’s sort of easy to get around guys that want to be coached.”

But that’s not all Choice did. He went straight to his former pupil from Georgia Tech and Texas, Jahymr Gibbs . The 23-year-old running back for the Detroit Lions was Choice’s favorite then and still is. Choice had a lot to say about Gibbs at the press conference. Let’s hear him out.

Tashard Choice says Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the smartest running backs he’s ever coached
Tashard Choice and Jahmyr Gibbs share a history at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football and Texas. Choice has been keeping tabs on Gibbs ever since.

Tashard Choice, newest RB coach for the Detroit Lions, praised his former pupil, Jahmyr Gibbs, “I always tell him(Jahmyr Gibbs) he’s one of the smartest running backs I’ve ever coached. He’s a natural football player. You tell him something, he understands it, and he gets it right down. You don’t have to coach him, over and over again, on football stuff. It is easy to him.”

Tashard Choice says the sky is the limit for Jahmyr Gibbs, but he’s going to push him like no other
“Having an opportunity to get around him(Jahmyr Gibbs) now, coaching, I’m going to be harder on him even more - same way, I tell them all - day zero, he can’t do everything right on the field. But Jahmyr Gibbs, I love.

Same thing with David Montgomery . They are on the football field - they are the player, not the person. Coaching them to get better when they get off the field, try to get used to them as a person to see what makes them go, what makes them tick.”

Choice continued, “A lot of them I understand. But it’s the same thing with DMo(David Montgomery) - the same thing with Craig(Reynolds) and (Sione)Vaki, because they got to know that first - I care about them more than the game.

If you get players to understand that it’s about your actions, not about what you say- it’s about what you do. And so, it’s been pretty cool to be around him(Jahmyr Gibbs). But for him, the sky’s the limit. I’m going to push him; I’m going to push him like no other, though. I have to.”
