Rumors regarding the Pittsburgh Pirates' future for pitcher Paul Skenes have been in circulation. There has already been plenty of speculation on how long he will be a Pirate. Paul Skenes has played a significant role in the Pirates' season this year, but experts think that they may trade him soon. On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, MLB reporter Jeff Passan commented on the situation while making an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. His remarks have created fresh debates among baseball circles.

Jeff Passan confirms Pirates are likely to trade Paul Skenes soon

On The Pat McAfee Show, Jeff Passan laid out that the Pirates might not be able to retain Paul Skenes in the long run. Passan thinks if the team is not going to give him a big extension, it is wise to trade him now when his value is extremely high.

Paul Skenes, selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft, has had an excellent 2024 season to date. In nine starts, he has an ERA of 2.63, with 53 strikeouts and just 15 walks.

His performance has made him one of the most promising young starters in the league. He was also designated as the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year.

Passan opined, "What is Paul Skenes' motivation to sign with the Pirates presently when the Pirates haven't demonstrated a desire from Bob Nutting on down to sign guys who are going to help improve this team?" He went on, "The Pirates have not demonstrated that they are deserving of a Paul Skenes extension."

Trade pressure builds as future uncertain
Passan also added that the Pirates have control over Paul Skenes' contract until 2029, but if they are certain that he won't remain after that, it might be wise to trade him prior to the value decreasing. He stated, "There are teams that are already going to ask about Paul Skenes at the trade deadline this year."

The Pirates have been doing poorly this year, and numerous fans feel the team needs to be fully rebuilt. Some feel it would be wise to trade Skenes and add new players. Others wish the Pirates could strengthen their roster and encourage Skenes to remain.

Paul Skenes has not said anything publicly regarding his future with the Pirates. For the moment, fans will keep watching and waiting for explanations as the trade deadline draws closer.
