Barack Obama applauds Walter Clayton Jr. and Florida Gators after stunning comeback win over Houston in NCAA final

The University of Florida Gators became national champions for the third time when they defeated the University of Houston Cougars 65-63 on April 7th 2025 at the NCAA men's basketball championship.

During the game played in San Antonio the Gators demonstrated their determination while senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. helped bring the team back from behind.

Both President Barack Obama and millions of fans together with athletic field participants congratulated the team after their remarkable victory.

By the early part of the second half, Houston had increased their lead to 12 points, firmly taking charge of the game.

However, the Gators refused to back down. Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr., who was scoreless in the first half, stepped up and played a pivotal role in Florida's comeback. He scored 11 points in the second half and made a key defensive play in the final seconds, blocking Houston's chance for a game-winning shot.


Richard led Will provided 18 points alongside Alex Condon who scored 12 points for Florida Gators. Alijah Martin closed Florida's victory with his two crucial free throws when there was 46.5 seconds left on the clock to build an unshakable lead.

The Gators defense arrested key defensive situations at crucial times during the game to secure an important victory. Florida won its first national championship since 2007 under the leadership of head coach Todd Golden who achieved this victory as a 39-year-old making him the youngest person to win a national title since 1983.


All basketball fans celebrated when Florida secured their victory. The team received congratulatory wishes from ex-President Barack Obama who acknowledged their hard work and vibrant approach throughout the competition. He said, “What a comeback! Congrats to Walter Clayton, Jr. and the Florida Gators on their third national title. This was a fun team to watch.”

The path Walter Clayton Jr. took to get to this impressive milestone is truly remarkable. He was initially a standout football recruit in high school but opted to focus on basketball instead. He began his college journey at Iona under the guidance of coach Rick Pitino, later transferring to Florida.
