Aaron Rodgers' indecision is stressing the Steelers' plans as offseason workouts begin and draft looms

Send Push
The Pittsburgh Steelers are staring down a major decision at the quarterback position, and time is rapidly running out. As offseason workouts kick off next week and the NFL Draft looms on April 24, the franchise is still waiting on a definitive answer from Aaron Rodgers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the legendary quarterback is “entering the critical stretch” of making his final decision — and it could make or break Pittsburgh’s offseason plans.

Steelers’ coaching staff faces uncertainty as Aaron Rodgers stalls
“If Aaron Rodgers decides that he wants to play in Pittsburgh… I would think that he would want to be there, boots on the ground, from Day 1 of the offseason program,” Schefter said on his podcast. It’s a logical stance, especially considering the 40-year-old quarterback missed all of the 2023 season with an Achilles injury. However, history suggests Rodgers may not prioritize early workouts — he skipped mandatory minicamp with the Jets last year to travel to Egypt.

The uncertainty is putting clear pressure on the Steelers’ coaching staff and front office. Schefter points out that the team is forced to prepare two versions of its offensive playbook: one for the possibility of Rodgers signing, and another for Mason Rudolph , Skyler Thompson, or a potential rookie QB. “So this is tough on the coaches. This is tough on the front office. This is tough on all the Steelers fans who have been waiting for an answer,” he said.

With head coach Mike Tomlin and team president Art Rooney II previously downplaying the importance of minicamp, it may seem like there’s no rush. But as the draft nears — and with Shedeur Sanders dropping, Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough rising, and defensive star T.J. Watt quietly signaling contract frustrations — the pressure is mounting.

Aaron Rodgers’ decision could shift Steelers’ draft and contract priorities
The situation is growing more complex by the day. The Steelers need clarity not just to shape their quarterback room but to potentially settle other key roster issues, including Watt’s contract. Rodgers’ delay may be influencing those negotiations.

Ultimately, Schefter believes we’re at a tipping point. And if the Steelers want any stability going into draft week, they’ll need Rodgers to either commit — or officially walk away. As of now, the ball is still firmly in Rodgers’ court.
