The Delhi Metro has been an integral part of the city's transportation network for years, providing a quick and convenient means of getting around. Yet, aside from its function as a commuter rail, it has recently become a viral hotspot. From vloggers recording the silky ride to passengers embroiled in furious arguments, the metro has been the site of all sorts of surprise moments that go viral on social media. One of them is the group of women who conducted a spiritual kirtan, which has given rise to admiration and controversy.

Women performing loud bhajans in Delhi Metro goes viral

Recently, in one viral video, a group of women stepped onto a moving Delhi Metro train and initiated a full-fledged kirtan. It was an unplanned religious performance characterized by loud bhajans and dholkis as well as manjiras being played in the background. The women were attired in traditional clothing, with red scarves bearing religious symbols, to enhance the cultural and spiritual showcase. The act, which appeared to be both devotion and revelry, became a subject of interest among other passengers and, of course, social media individuals.

CRPF speedy response to women’s kirtan performance in Delhi Metro

Just as in any public place, there are regulations guiding the comfort and safety of all parties. The kirtan performance of the group was halted when a member of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stopped them. The officer, presumably worried about the disturbance, politely requested the women to halt their performance. The group, perceiving that their actions were against Metro rules, apologised and promised not to perform the act again.

This act created significant questions regarding the balance between individual expression and preserving order in public areas. Although some might have appreciated the show, others saw the necessity for the authorities to intervene and make sure that the rights of all passengers were upheld.

There was also widespread support for the actions of the authorities. The CRPF officer who intervened to stop the performance was appreciated by some social media users for upholding the rules. "Ye sahi kiya CISF," (This was the right decision, CISF) wrote one user, appreciating the move by the authorities. Another user also said this, "W for the security," referring to the speedy response by security forces to revive order. Such responses reflect the appreciation among some individuals for the place of security and discipline in ensuring the ease of running public services such as the Metro.

Social media reactions to women’s kirtan video

The women's kirtan video went viral on social media very fast. In no time, it gained over 2.6 million views, in addition to over 91,000 likes and over 8,000 comments on Instagram. The sight of women singing religious songs with so much passion within a moving train fascinated many. To some, it was a joyful and entertaining exhibition of public worship, while others considered it an interruption to the morning commute.

As to be expected, the incident brought a lot of buzz online, with reactions ranging from amusement and criticism. Numerous social media users found the incident amusing. One of the users joked, "Delhi Metro mein aapka swagat hai!" (Welcome to Delhi Metro!), a line that mocks the way rides on the Delhi Metro can be so unpredictable and thrilling. Others joked, "30 rupay ki ticket me concert dekh liya".

But some people did say how they wished they could be at such events, saying, "Why don't I ever get such Metros?" and "I would catch a metro if this is the atmosphere." They highlight how everyone tends to look at the Metro as a place where unusual and funny things might happen.

Delhi Metro rules for travellers

For frequent travelers on the Delhi Metro, some rules come as second nature. These rules are to be followed to create a serene, secure, and disciplined atmosphere for all who board the train. In this specific case, several rules were violated:

  • Sitting on the floor
Passengers are not permitted to sit on the train floor. The offender can be fined Rs 200 if caught. In serious situations, passengers are required to exit the train and take an alternative train.

  • Playing loud music
Making noise by playing music through speakers or yelling is not allowed. People who do so can be fined up to Rs 500. The regulation is put in place to keep the surroundings quiet for all.

  • Recording videos or creating reels

The Delhi Metro rules do not allow passengers to record videos or content within the train. This is primarily for avoiding distractions and for ensuring privacy for the passengers. In case a person is found recording videos or making Instagram Reels, they may be fined Rs 500, their fare for the ticket could be forfeited, and even asked to exit the train.
