THANE: A sub-inspector attached to the Thane Nagar police station was suspended following an incident of alleged denial of medical assistance to a 19-year-old unmarried woman in labour at the civic-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa.

The incident occurred on Thursday when the woman, who resides under flyovers in the area and does odd jobs, was taken to the hospital after going into labour. A police officer said the hospital staff allegedly refused to admit her and cited procedural issues, instructing her to instead contact the police.

When the woman and her mother sought help at the Thane Nagar police station, sub-inspector Nitin Jadhav reportedly delayed taking action, insisting on proof of the woman's age despite her mother's assurance that documents confirming her birthdate would be provided later. Only after this would they take down her complaint, said the police officer. There was some confusion as the woman was giving a lower age, said the officer.

After returning without receiving the necessary medical care, the woman delivered a stillborn baby.

Following the baby's death, the police registered a case against the woman's 20-year-old boyfriend and arrested him for luring her with false promise of marriage and raping her several times since May 2023.

The case was initially registered with the Thane Nagar police station and later transferred to Kapurbawdi police station, said the officer. The police confirmed the age of the woman based on her school documents and ascertained that she was 19 years old and not a minor.

Police officials took disciplinary action against sub-inspector Jadhav for failure to register an FIR when the woman initially approached the police station. "Ideally, the hospital should have admitted the woman in pain and should have sent a medico-legal case (MLC) to the police station concerned irrespective of the age, which was not done. Prima facie, the officer seems to have erred and action has been taken against him," a police officer said.
