MUMBAI: Just a year into their marriage, a 24-year-old man allegedly strangulated his 23-year-old wife at their residence in Kaman, Naigaon (East).

The couple reportedly frequently argued as the husband, Ismail Choudhary, suspected the victim, Khurshida Khatun, was involved with another man.

On Wednesday afternoon, their fight escalated and Choudhary allegedly strangled Khatun with his hands. Pelhar police found strangulation marks on Khatun's neck.

Police said that in a state of panic, Choudhary, who works with a private firm, called an aggregator cab and transported his wife's body to his brother, Mustaq's (34) residence in Navjeevan, Nalasopara (East), approximately 12km away. He told the driver that his wife was unwell and needed to be taken to his brother's place.

Upon arriving there, Choudhary explained the situation to Mustaq and contacted Khatun's brother Mohammed in Pune, claiming she had been unwell for several days and had succumbed to the ailment on Wednesday. Police said Chaudhury asked Mohammed if he could perform the last rites. He asked Choudhary to wait for him to reach Naigaon.

Choudhary then sought a doctor to obtain a death certificate, claiming his wife had died due to ill health. The doctor grew suspicious when Choudhary was hesitant to allow him to examine the body at his brother's home. The body was kept in Mustaq's home till late evening. The doctor alerted Pelhar police, who detained Choudhary for questioning.

Meanwhile, Khatun's brother arrived from Pune and demanded an autopsy, stating he was unaware of his sister's alleged illness until Choudhary called him.

Pelhar police arrested Choudhary and his brother, and handed over the case to Naigaon police.

Upon questioning, Choudhary reportedly confessed to the crime. Police went to his brother's residence and collected the body for an autopsy. The autopsy report is pending to determine the cause of death.

Choudhary reportedly told cops that an unidentified man was at home when he returned from work on Wednesday.

Both Choudhary and Mustaq have been booked under BNS sections for murder and destruction of evidence.

Police plan to question the aggregator cab driver and review the closed-circuit television footage as part of their investigation. The doctor's statement will be recorded too.
