Fake cop in Mumbai tries to extort Rs 50,000 from student in auto; arrested

MUMBAI: While returning home from her Vile Parle college in an autorickshaw, a 21-year-old post-graduate student had a "terrifying experience" at the hands of a scammer who tried to extort Rs 50,000 from her saying she possessed an e-cigarette.

Within 12 hours of her complaint on Thursday, MIDC police arrested the three accused, who turned out to be BMC's clean-up marshals.

Around 4.30pm on Oct 14, Dilshad Khan (34) and his two accomplices, Simranjit Singh and Rafique Chaudhari, had followed the student, A S Sen, from outside her college before intercepting her auto near Holy Family Church on the MIDC-Seepz route. The incident lasted for over 15 minutes in a moving rickshaw before Khan exited the vehicle when Sen mustered courage to video-record his actions. Sen filed a complaint with MIDC police on Thursday after tagging the incident on Mumbai police's X handle.

DCP (Zone X) Sachin Gunjal said, "The case was solved within 12 hours after the team tracked the accused with the help of technical assistance and scanning various CCTVs' footage. Khan was arrested from Andheri while his accomplices were arrested from Jogeshwari and Saki Naka."

The impostor told Sen to withdraw Rs 50,000 from an ATM to avoid being arrested. When Sen said she did not have the funds, he told her to ask her friends to transfer Rs 10,000. Sen, thinking quickly, pretended to call a friend for money but instead dialled her brother and explained the situation to him. "My brother suspected it was a fraud and advised me to record the man's actions. This angered him," Sen said in the FIR.

The incident captured on video has gone viral with more than 1,500 views. In the video, Sen can be heard assertively stating her location and the situation, mentioning that a man claiming to be a police officer had stopped her in the middle of the road and was forcibly taking her to Powai chowki. As she continues recording, the impersonator looks visibly unsettled and exits the auto.

DCP Gunjal supervised the team, which included ACP Shashikant Bhosale, senior inspector Prataprao Kadam, sub-inspectors Anandrao Kashid and Pramod Khotwad, and the detection team. They nabbed Khan and his aides after analysing footage of at least 50 CCTVs. "The CCTV footage showed them entering a petrol pump where they paid through GPay. This helped to identify their details," said a cop.

MIDC police senior inspector Prataprao Kadam said Khan had been booked in a molestation case in 2022 at Santacruz police station. "Those arrested work as clean-up marshals on a contract basis with BMC. Khan and his team seem to have done a recce and followed the girl from her college. The team is probing if the accused had committed a similar offence in the past."
