PALANPUR: A long-standing land dispute between two branches of a family escalated into violence late Thursday night in Bhanmer village of Aravalli district, when the son of a retired police officer allegedly opened fire, injuring his young niece, her grandfather, and a cousin.
According to police, the victims were returning home from a wedding procession when the accused, Vaibhav Baranda, allegedly fired multiple rounds. A Class 5 student, Avni, was hit in the abdomen and arm; her grandfather Ravji Baranda suffered head and facial injuries, while her uncle Vijay sustained bullet wounds on his elbow, thigh, and knee.
The Bhiloda police have booked Kanaiyalal Baranda (Vaibhav's father), Vaibhav, and their relative Mahesh Baranda for attempt to murder based on a complaint by Bhurji Baranda, Ravji's son.
The complaint reveals that Ravji, a retired Army personnel, and his brother Kanaiyalal, a former police sub-inspector, have been in conflict over dividing their agricultural land. Tensions had flared up during an altercation in February and both families had since severed relations.
As per Bhurji's account, the three accused intercepted the family near their home and began a confrontation, during which Vaibhav pulled out a firearm and opened fire indiscriminately. The assailants then fled the scene in an SUV.
The injured were first taken to a private hospital in Bhiloda and later shifted to Himmatnagar Civil Hospital. Sources said all three victims are now out of danger.
