NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has criticized the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar over the recent hooch tragedy .

Yadav accused the government of major corruption under the guise of the liquor ban , alleging that it has led to the creation of a parallel economy worth 30,000 crores.

Referring to the deaths caused by spurious liquor, Yadav said, "The chief minister who opened liquor shops at every square and intersection of Bihar and took thousands of lives due to spurious liquor in the name of liquor ban is now pretending to be a Mahatma."

The recent hooch tragedy has claimed 33 lives, with 28 deaths reported from Siwan and 5 from Saran. This incident has sparked a political controversy, with opposition parties questioning the effectiveness of the liquor ban imposed by Nitish Kumar 's government.

Yadav accused Nitish Kumar of encouraging the sale and consumption of liquor during his earlier tenures.

He stated, "chief minister Shri Nitish Kumar took every measure to increase the consumption of liquor in Bihar in his initial 10 years and now he is taking every measure to sell illegal liquor."

According to Yadav, the number of rural liquor shops increased from under 500 in 2004-05 to 2360 in 2014-15, and state-wide, the number of liquor shops doubled from 3000 to over 6000 in the same period.

He added that, on average, 51 liquor shops were opened each day in Bihar before Nitish Kumar came to power, and this number increased to 300 per day in the next ten years.

Yadav also pointed out the issue of confiscated liquor being sold in the markets with the involvement of JDU leaders, liquor mafia, and police officials.

Citing a National Family Health Survey report, he mentioned that more people drink alcohol in Bihar than in Maharashtra despite the prohibition.

"Yet according to Nitishji, prohibition is in force in Bihar, what a joke," he added.

He claimed that over 400 people are being arrested in alcohol-related cases despite the prohibition in the state.

Yadav concluded, “Liquor ban is the biggest corruption of Nitish Kumar's rule. In Bihar, a parallel economy of about 30 thousand crores is being run in the form of illegal business in the name of liquor, the direct benefit of which is going to JDU party and its leaders."

The Gopalganj Superintendent of Police, Awdhesh Dixit, stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is investigating the matter and has so far arrested 14 individuals and conducted raids at over 200 locations.
