Berhampur: Following allegations of organ theft, the body of a 44-year-old man was exhumed by police from the burial ground at Tikarabaju under Kandhamal district’s Baliguda police limits three days after his death for post-mortem.

Babula Digal, a businessman, sustained head injuries after being hit by a mini-truck loaded with iron rods on Oct 13 while he along with his wife and son were going towards Rampur in Kalahandi district on a motorcycle.

He was admitted to different hospitals, including MKCG Medical College and Hospital here before being admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack on Oct 15 night. He died on Oct 16 night.

Hospital authorities handed over the body to the family members of the deceased. Digal was buried in his village on Oct 17, police said.

His son Esak Digal lodged an FIR at Baliguda police station that his father died in an accident. He told police about the hospital not performing autopsy.

He said while his father sustained head injuries, they found surgery marks in his stomach. “We suspect that my father’s organs have been removed,” he alleged.

The state govt ordered a joint probe by the health director, commissionerate police and Baliguda police into the allegation of organ theft. “I have instructed the health director and commissionerate police in this issue,” said health minister Mukesh Mahaling.

He said stringent action would be taken against the person found guilty in the probe.

Inspector-in charge, Baliguda, Sushant Sahu said after the body was exhumed, the autopsy was conducted at sub-divisional hospital in Baliguda. A road accident case was registered against an unknown vehicle. “We are also investigating the allegation of the deceased’s son, who suspected that the man’s organs had been removed. All details will be known after getting the post-mortem report,” he said.
