The gorgeous beach home to Mediterranean's longest coastline - but it's off beaten track

The summer months are just around the corner and many Brits will be looking forward to a holiday in the sunshine. is always a popular spot to visit but may not be aware of one hidden away beach.

Xerocambos Beach, which is located in the lesser-visited southeastern part of Crete, has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean. The beach boasts white silky sands and clear waters, making it the perfect place for tourists to spend a day in the sunshine.

It also has a number of caves and a neighbouring bay which makes a great spot to picnic. The beach has a dramatic mountain backdrop which adds to its superb spectacle.

However, people looking to visit the beach have been warned of its hidden location. Xerocambos is located off the beaten track and you'll need to follow winding roads to get there.

According to , visitors should head from Sitia town to the traditional mountain village of Armeni before driving on Greece's "scariest" road. It looks like a coil along the edge of a deep gorge before finally reaching the near-deserted coves.

Once you've arrived at Xerocambos Beach, there are several tavernas and guesthouses to stay at. According to TripAdvisor, Akti Rooms, which has apartments near the beach, is one of the best places to stay.

A number of people have given Xerocambos beach glowing reviews on TripAdvisor. One person said: "Very good beach with sunbeds for free, I only paid 3 euros for my coffee, fantastic scenery, wonderful sea! I recommend this beach!"

A second added: "The beach is a hidden paradise with breathtaking panoramic views. Clean water is ideal for swimming. The ideal destination for those seeking peace and natural beauty."

A third wrote: "Fabulous views and interesting watching the coming and going of the yachts, the fishing boats bringing in their catch and it going straight into the kitchen of the lovely beach side taverna Aloni. There are a couple of other tavernas too.

"Changing cubicle and shower on the beach and some sun beds free to use if you have a drink or some food at the tavernas. You can get here on the quirky local bus with its distinctive tootle horn which sounds all along the route, a treat not to be missed! Well worth a visit, you too may fall under its spell!"
