presenter welcomed Labour Health Secretary onto the news programme, with the presenter clearly being determined to bring up winter fuel payments.
Prime Minister following the party's huge loss in last week's elections. The changes were estimated to bring 10,000 pensioners into poverty around the UK, and with their popularity plummeting, reports claimed Labour were seeing if they could raise the threshold.
As Kay pushed Streeting on an answer about whether Starmer or Chancellor Rachel Reeves were working out a U-turn, the Health Secretary was forced to shut him down three times, insisting he wasn't privy to the conversations, and wasn't prepared to speculate.
As the presenter tried to ask again, Streeting responded: "I'm not trying to test your viewers' patience at this point but as a member of the government, I don't speculate on reports in the media or what the government could do..."
Kay jumped in and scoffed: "You're right in there in government, you're very close with Starmer and Reeves, you're right in there aren't you?"
Streeting started laughing as he replied: "I'm trying desperately hard and failing to not get drawn into speculation on the future of this policy, I like to give straight answers to questions but I genuinely can't speculate on future policies, we are day by day, delivering the promises we made to you at the last election, things are moving in the right direction, but we know that people won't necessarily be feeling those changes yet, and what is why the PM said we need to go further and faster," as he gave examples of where the government were hoping improvements were being made around the country.
As Streeting refused to give an answer about the potential U-turn, viewers rushed to social media to share their frustration at the "car crash" interview.
One viewer raged: "How on earth don't you know what is going on within @UKLabour at @10DowningStreet, @wesstreeting? Car crash of an interview with @BBCBreakfast with @jonkay01 , also, hope you had a great holiday @sallynugent."
Another added: "Ffs John, you're like a dog with a bone! He's told you 3 times that he can't comment."
A third chimed in: "Jon flogging a dead horse, he should know how politicians work by now," as a fourth simply said: "FFS Jon."
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
