Send Push

In preparation for Cyclone Dana, the Odisha government has decided to close schools in 14 districts from October 23 to 25. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students as the state braces for severe weather conditions.

The affected districts include Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Cuttack. The order was issued by the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner on October 21.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall and strong winds as Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall on Thursday.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi assured the public that the government is well-prepared to handle any emergencies related to the cyclone. “Zero casualties will be ensured. There is no need to panic. The government is fully prepared to handle the situation,” he said during a review meeting on the state's cyclone readiness.

Majhi emphasized that a comprehensive evacuation plan will be implemented to protect vulnerable areas, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and Fire Services on standby. The government is actively monitoring the situation and will ensure that cyclone shelters are stocked with essential supplies.

He also mentioned that discussions were held to facilitate the quick restoration of power, water supply, and communication systems. “Uninterrupted electricity will be ensured for hospitals. The concerned department is already keeping a close watch to prevent hoarding or overcharging of essential commodities,” Majhi added.

The cyclone, which formed from a low-pressure system in the east-central Bay of Bengal, is expected to strengthen into a severe storm, with wind speeds reaching up to 120 kmph. It is projected to cross the Odisha-West Bengal coastline between Puri and Sagar Island by the night of October 24 or early October 25.
