West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced that the state government will initiate a fresh recruitment drive for teachers by May 31, in line with the Supreme Court directive linked to the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment case.
In a significant relief to those affected by the SC order that led to job terminations, Banerjee assured that teachers who lost their jobs will be eligible to apply, with age relaxation and consideration of prior teaching experience.
“We want all those teachers who lost their jobs to get their jobs back. But we also have to follow the Supreme Court directive on issuing the notification by May 31,” said the Chief Minister at a press conference.
Banerjee added that the government will simultaneously pursue a review petition seeking the reinstatement of the terminated teachers, even as it complies with the top court's order to begin a fresh recruitment process.
“Both the review petition and the process of issuing the notification will go on simultaneously,” she said.
The statement comes as large-scale protests continue across the state by teaching and non-teaching staff affected by the SSC recruitment scam verdict.
Banerjee reiterated that the government is committed to providing a fair opportunity for the affected candidates:
“Age will not be a barrier. Those who lost their jobs will be allowed to sit for the exam even if they have crossed the usual age limit. They will also receive the benefit of their experience.”
The detailed notification for recruitment is expected to be published on or before May 31.
