How much do Indians spend on weddings? Survey reveals average costs that will blow your mind

Weddings in India have always been grand affairs, brimming with love, celebration, and a sea of guests. A recent survey by WeddingWire India offers a fascinating look into how these celebrations are evolving, revealing what modern couples truly desire for their big day.

When it comes to wedding planning, the cost often takes centre stage. According to the WeddingWire India survey, the average cost of hosting a wedding celebration in India in 2024 is a staggering Rs 29.6 lakhs.

So, what’s behind this surge in wedding costs? It seems that destination weddings and a rising demand for personalised celebrations are major contributors. Today’s couples are leaning into unique, customised experiences that showcase their individual style and preferences. From themed décor and tailor-made outfits to extravagant destination venues and bespoke catering, couples are sparing no expense to make their weddings one-of-a-kind.

But the numbers don’t stop there. A hefty 30% of respondents spent over 30 lakhs on their weddings, with 25% shelling out more than 40 lakhs. In fact, 17% of couples went all in, planning weddings with budgets that topped 50 lakhs! The “Big Fat Indian Wedding” is very much alive and thriving.

Another interesting insight from the WeddingWire India survey is the size of guest lists. In 2024, the average number of guests at an Indian wedding was 330, a small but noticeable rise from 326 in 2023. It seems the trend for larger celebrations is making a comeback, especially as people are keen to celebrate with everyone they hold dear.

When it comes to venue selection, it’s no longer just about finding enough space, it's about creating the perfect setting for the big day. Whether it’s royal palaces, beach resorts, lush gardens, or grand banquet halls, couples are opting for venues that reflect the grandeur of their celebrations. The increasing demand for such luxurious locations, combined with heightened expectations for hospitality and décor, is helping to push up costs.

Booking venues takes up a significant chunk of the wedding budget. According to the survey, the average cost of securing venues for all wedding events is around six lakhs. But the figures vary, with 40% of respondents spending about 7.5 lakhs on their wedding venues. For 31% of couples, the cost of venues exceeded 10 lakhs.
