Director Ashwath Marimuthu, fresh off the success of his latest film Dragon, has found himself at the center of an unexpected social media storm — this time not for his cinematic storytelling, but for a hiring call that went viral. What began as a light-hearted post looking for ten assistant directors has now snowballed into a massive flood of interest, with over 15,000 applications pouring in from aspiring filmmakers across the country.

Ashwath’s witty Instagram announcement sparked the frenzy. In the now-viral post, he humorously described the kind of candidates he was hoping to work with on his future projects. The tone was playful, but the response was anything but casual. Within days, thousands of hopefuls began sending their resumes, tagging him, and sharing their enthusiasm online.

Initially, Ashwath had only planned to onboard 10 assistant directors. However, the overwhelming level of interest led him to rethink his approach. In a follow-up update, the director shared that he would now double the intake, hiring 20 ADs in total — splitting them evenly between his next two film projects.

While the numbers are staggering, Ashwath is making sure that the process remains fair. Aware of the sheer volume of applications, he has assured everyone that each submission will be reviewed with equal attention. No shortcuts, no special treatment, and definitely no bypassing the system through social media tags or messages — every applicant, whether they sent their resume in the first hour or the last, will be evaluated through the same process.

The volume of resumes — 15,000 — paints a picture of not just the popularity of Ashwath Marimuthu, but also the hunger and excitement in the young filmmaking community to break into the industry.

This unexpected job frenzy follows the success of Dragon, a 2025 Tamil-language coming-of-age comedy drama starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Anupama Parameswaran, and Kayadu Lohar. The film, centered around a college dropout who fakes his way into a high-paying job, struck a chord with audiences and became a box office success.
