A 70-year-old man died and four others, including two children, were injured after a speeding car, driven by a 19-year-old without a valid licence, spun out of control in northeast Delhi’s Nand Nagri on Saturday afternoon, according to a TOI report.

Police said the car’s accelerator got stuck because of the driver’s slippers, which led to the vehicle speeding up uncontrollably. The car hit several two-wheelers, including two motorcycles, a scooter and a moped, before running over the elderly man, identified as Bhogi Ram.

The tragic incident took place around 1:20 pm when Bhogi Ram was sitting on a footpath outside a shop after having lunch. He was chatting with some local residents when the car, driven by a teen named Bilal, hit him and dragged him for nearly 15 metres. Bhogi Ram died on the spot.

Among the injured were Subhash Chand, a salesman, and two children. Subhash is in a critical condition with a fractured leg.

The driver, Bilal, was reportedly caught and beaten up by bystanders before the police arrived. The angry crowd also damaged the car. Bilal was taken into custody and later arrested. Police have registered a case of negligent driving and causing death.

Family was preparing for wedding
According to neighbours, Bhogi Ram had been looking forward to his granddaughter’s wedding later this month. “He was excited about the celebrations. Now, the family is in mourning,” one local said.

Officers confirmed that the car accelerated because Bilal’s slippers got stuck in the pedal. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
