Man rejects wife's 'stupid' baby name choice – and people say she should thank him

Send Push

A mum-to-be has been told to “thank” her husband after he vetoed her favourite name choice for their daughter.

Picking the perfect name for a is a serious undertaking. Though not at all fair, a person’s name can often lead to incorrect assumptions, negative first impressions, and snap judgements.

When coming to the final decision to determine what to call , it’s worth bearing in mind their name has to suit them for their entire life. You’re not just naming a , you’re naming a future adult, which is why it’s so important to pick something that won’t land them with any problems in later life.

Many parents seem to care deeply about giving their child a “unique” name so they stand out from the crowd, or aren’t in a classroom with several other children who all share the same name. While these intentions are usually good, it can lead to some babies being given names that are incredibly tricky to pronounce, or ones which don’t make any sense phonetically.

When parents choose to alter a spelling to change up a standard or traditional name, more often than not, it doesn’t actually affect the name’s pronunciation - but it does affect how people see and judge it. In a classroom, if there were two children named Elizabeth, but one set of parents chose to spell it as ‘Alyzybehth’, then both children would still look up when hearing the name ‘Elizabeth’ called by the teacher. The problem is, poor little ‘Alyzybehth’ will have a hell of a hard time spelling their name.

This appears to be the case with one pregnant woman, who wanted to name her daughter Crystal, but with an entirely different spelling. She shared her desire in the popular group, ‘ ’, which boasts 333.4K members.

: “I won't ever be naming a child this because my husband hates it, but: Krstyl. Roast me. How bad is it? Yes, there's intentionally no vowels.”

Hundreds of group members rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts. One person said: “You should buy your husband some flowers or something to thank him.”

Another didn’t hold back: “I’m going to be blunt for the sake of your future daughter. It’s not cool, it’s not interesting, it’s stupid. Straight up stupid.”

A third simply commented: “Thank god for your husband”, while a fourth said: “Your husband is doing the Lord's work.”

One person, actually named Crystal, said: “Well… you did it. You somehow made the name Crystal worse.” And another Facebook user added: “Krystl would have made more sense. But awful. Hate the name and detest your spelling.”
