Mainz fans turn on Jurgen Klopp as blunt message unveiled to Liverpool legend

Jurgen Klopp has , the Bundesliga outfit Mainz, after its fans unveiled a banner criticizing his new job with the Red Bull group.

Klopp parted ways with in May following an astonishing nine-year period at the helm and is set to become Red Bull's head of global soccer from January 1, it was . The appointment caused quite a stir back in Germany, especially among those who cheered for him at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, where he managed each club for seven seasons.

In a clear display of disappointment prior to Mainz's match against RB Leipzig on Saturday, fans presented a banner with words that took aim at Klopp's decision to join the company behind their opponent. "Have you forgotten everything we made you become? Are you crazy?" it read.

Mainz lost the game 2-0 with Xavi Simons and Willi Orban scoring for Leipzig. A different sign further in the crowd referenced what is supposedly an old saying of Klopp's: "I like people up to the point where they disappoint me."

On discussing his move last week, Klopp expressed his enthusiasm: "After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this. The role may have changed but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not.

"By joining Red Bull at a global level, I want to develop, improve and support the incredible football talent that we have at our disposal. There are many ways that we can do this front using the elite knowledge and experience that Red Bull possesses to learning from other sports and other industries.

"Together we can discover what is possible. I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs, but ultimately, I am one part of an organization that is unique, innovative, and forward-looking. As I said, this could not excite me more."

Liverpool.com says: Will this sort of reaction cause Klopp to rethink his stance on taking the job? It seems unlikely given that he would have known how it would be viewed. Leipzig is hated by the rest of the Bundesliga and Klopp will have been aware of the strength of feeling toward the energy drinks giant.
