Jose Mourinho had every right to fume - he won't get a better chance for Man Utd revenge

Little wonder saw red. The Special One will never have a better chance of getting one over on the club that sacked him.

Christian Eriksen’s rocket shot and Andre Onana’s heroics in goal ensured that, the team that has forgotten how to win in Europe returned home with a point.

in the stand after being sent off for the ninth time in his career for giving French referee Clement Turpin a volley of abuse.

The Fenerbahce boss was incandescent after Turpin waved away a furious penalty appeal when Manuel Ugarte challenged Bright Osayi-Samuel just a few minutes after Youssef En-Nesyri had cancelled out Eriksen’s first-half blast.

In the end, United escaped from a seething Sukru Saracoglu Stadium with their third successive draw of a faltering campaign.

They sit 21st in the table.

But the result did little to lift Erik ten Hag’s prospects of suffering the same fate that eventually befell Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag’s team have now just won one of their last 11 European games. They have conceded 18 goals on their last six trips to the continent - and they have now led for four of those games and failed to win.

United travelled to the Asian banks of the Bosphorus with a squad stripped of 10 players by injury and suspension. But Ten Hag then astonished everyone by leaving Champions League-winning midfielder Casemiro on the bench and asking full-back Noussair Mazroaoui as a No 10.

Mourinho will no doubt point out that the team he sent out consisted of three free transfers, three loan signings and was assembled at a cost of around £40million - which was what United paid for the anonymous Joshua Zirkzee.

And he could also suggest that on another night the side currently sitting fourth in Super Lig would have won with plenty to spare had they taken their chances.

The home fans created a deafening wall of sound. Their team included former United midfielders Fred and Sofyan Amrabat - and they rocked the Reds with a furious start.

But United drew first blood when they went ahead after a classic counter-attack in the 15th minute. Fenerbahce felt Ugarte’s challenge on Fred was a foul - but once Alejandro Garnacho was sent speeding down the left, the home team were in trouble.

The Argentine youngster’s cross found Mazraoui and when Zirkzee worked the ball back to Eriksen, the Dane found the top corner with a sweet swing of his right foot from 20 yards.

Rashford was inches away from doubling United’s lead when he took a coat of paint off the far post with a low drive after cutting in from the right.

Moments later, Dusan Tadic thought he had a tap-in for an equaliser when Onana spilled Szymanski’s cross, but Ugarte rescued the visitors with an astonishing block.

Mourinho looked close to tears on the touchline. Then En-Nesyri, Fenerbahce’s record signing, was thwarted by two sensational saves by Onana.

The United keeper did a fine impression of Gordon Banks to scoop out the Moroccan’s downward header before recovering to tip over his follow-up effort. This time, Mourinho could only laugh.

He was smiling for all the right reasons three minutes after the break when Allan Saint-Maximin crossed from the left and En-Nesyri smuggled himself between Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez to head home.

But his joy didn’t last long. And when he let rip after Osayi-Samuel had taken a dive after tangling with Ugarte, the Portuguese was sent packing.
