Frankie Dettori to be reunited with Emily Upjohn and Gosdens for Breeders' Cup mission

The band will be getting back together with Frankie Dettori booked for a reunion with trainers John and Thady Gosden next month.

The Italian riding star ended their alliance last year when he decided to quit Britain and relocate to California to try to crack the US.

There was one last hurrah when the 53-year-old rode Inspiral to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

She was one of many big race winners provided by the Gosden stable during a long association, which latterly included the likes of dual Arc winner Enable, Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn, champion stayer Stradivarius and top miler Palace Pier.

Inspiral was kept in training this year but failed to add to her score and has been retired while Emily Upjohn, who won four times under Dettori including two Group 1 races, has also yet to win in 2024.

Her two best runs under Kieran Shoemark were in two top level contests behind Bluestocking, on her latest start placing behind the first two finishers in this year’s Arc.

She has been named in two Breeders’ Cup races, the Turf and Filly & Mare Turf, with a decision to be made by Monday’s declaration deadline.

Dettori is one of the most decorated Breeders’ Cup jockeys with 15 victories in the unofficial racing ‘ championships’.

Emily Upjohn will be one of the jockey’s best chances to add to his score at the November 1 and 2 meeting at Del Mar.

He has also been booked on the William Knight-trained filly Frost At Dawn.

In the Classic he will take on City Of Troy with the Bob Baffert-trained Newgate, who Dettori rode to victory in the Santa Anita Handicap last year. He will also partner the Doug O’Neill-trained Katonah on the card.

Dettori’s agent Ron Anderson said: “Those two days, if you can win one race you’re doing really good.

“I think we’ve got a chance to win one and have a couple of placings. A lot of it is down to luck of the draw. The track is on the speedy side and you need a good draw and to get a good trip.”
